Cartagena Colombia, anyone been?
One of the few places that doesn’t have restrictions to enter/exit.

Any tips or is it just a normal resort type place?

I had a mate go there, sent back a lovely postcard with a ransom demand on it, never heard from him again, must of loved it out there......

I'm fairly sure Cartagena was mentioned in The Shield. If that's the case, I would assume Cartagena is a vastly dodgy place full of coked up, itchy-trigger-fingered Banditos, automatic rifles, warring Cartels and skanky prostitutes.

Sounds exactly like the intersection where Brixton used to meet Streatham, Tulse Hill and Clapham Park circa 25 years ago.

I'll feel right at home then ;-)

I spent the day there while on a cruise through the Panama Canal.

The old town in the centre is contained within a wall and has narrow streets and old buildings. Found a bar called the KGB Bar which had loads of Russian memorabilia (uniforms, gas masks and part of it made to look like the inside of a Russian sub) weird! (it has a web page). People seemed friendly but not much English spoken. Street traders were a pest and wouldn't take no for an answer. Didn't have time to try the beach but there were some really nice women.

Import to pirates.

Sir Francis Drake sacked and held it for ransom in the 16th century.

Captain Henry Morgan tried in the 17th but one of his ship the Oxford exploded in mysterious circumstances.

That is all I can remember.

Had a business trip lined up but it got cancelled

Would have had to sign that I agreed to the risk, kidnapping was rife, same in Mexico, so mixed feelings that it was off

GAVROS probably went there.

Or at least claimed to have done.

Lonely planet/rough guide etc say the resort is fine with usual precautions, Costa Rica is another goer but that’s pretty much U.K. prices once there.

I’ve been to quite a few ‘dangerous’ places (Salvador, manila, old Delhi) but only have ever been mugged twice and both times was in Ilford.

As I live in Colombia I go there very often. The old town is interesting although many of the hotels there cater for Americans and are expensive - some over $500 a night. Bocagrande a short taxi ride away tends to be cheaper for hotels.
This time of the year the city is normally busy as Cartagena is the destination for the rich of Colombia around the holidays. Covid numbers have flattened a bit here, there’s around 7,000 cases a day here in a population of 50 million but there’s far less testing than in Europe. I doubt if Cartagena is anything like back to normal and the country has plenty of restrictions in place at the moment.
Most things in Colombia are very cheap, the average wage here is around $200 a month but Cartagena is much more expensive than the rest of the country. Some things like hiring a boat for the day for fishing can be very expensive.
Colombia is known for its pretty women and generally Cartagena is a big destination for American stag weeks.
In terms of flights there are very few at the moment and the rules about testing before traveling have been changing all the time.
I’d recommend Cartagena but I’m just not convinced this is the time to come.

Re: Cartagena Colombia, anyone been?
Side, jan is my main holiday. Wanted to go to the churches and the dankshill depression in Ethiopia then on to Kenya/Uganda and Rwanda but Covid has knocked that into touch. Only a few places that have unrestricted access and Colombia is one of them.

Countries with NO Testing/Quarantines

Albania
Brazil
Colombia
Costa Rica
Dominican Republic
Kosovo
Mexico
North Macedonia
Serbia
Tanzania
Turkey

Cuba should be on that list as well.
